Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial

Washington, DC

The Washington, DC Martin Luther King, Jr. National Memorial Project Foundation, Inc., currently The Memorial Foundation, selected McKissack & McKissack to lead a joint venture design/build team, which included Turner Construction Company, Tompkins Builders, Inc., and Gilford Corporation, to build this historic memorial.  Situated on a 4-acre site along the Tidal Basin in Washington, DC, the memorial evokes the memory and spiritual presence of Dr. King.  Natural elements—stone, water, and trees—are used to underscore the themes of democracy, justice, hope, and love.  McKissack & McKissack is the Architect of Record and provided overall project management for the memorial.  Work included architecture; landscape architecture; geotechnical engineering; stormwater management and sediment control; roadway realignment; presentations to the U.S. Commission of Fine Arts, National Capital Planning Commission, and National Park Service; subsurface investigation; and hazardous materials testing.
